Hornets fall to Waupun as communities rally around injured senior

Posted

The Wautoma Hornets fell to Waupun Warriors 20-46 in an away game on Oct. 2, but by the end of the evening, the final score had become secondary as concern turned to senior Dom Rooney.

Wautoma came out strong in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 14-3 lead and putting the Hornets in control early. However, Waupun responded and Wautoma was unable to maintain their early momentum as the game progressed. The Warriors went on to outscore the Hornets 43-6 after Wautoma’s early advantage, ultimately handing Wautoma the 20-46 loss, moving Wautoma to a 1-5 record on the season.

Rooney, a senior football player for Wautoma wearing the #72, experienced a medical emergency during Friday night’s game and was ultimately transported by Med Flight to Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In the days since, support for Rooney and his family has spread throughout Wautoma and well beyond, with neighboring school districts, athletic programs, and community members sharing messages of support as #DomStrong spread across social media.

Dom’s mother, Kimberly Kozlowski, posted updates throughout the weekend, keeping the community updated on Rooney’s health condition. According to Kozlowski, after many tests, Rooney was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from a severe concussion. A team of neurological physicians and specialists is expected to conduct a full assessment and recovery plan this week. As of Sunday afternoon, Rooney remained unable to walk or talk.

As Wautoma hosts Adams Friendship this Friday, 10/9, for their final home game of the season, a 50/50 raffle will be hosted by the Wautoma Booster Club with proceeds going to the Rooney family to help with expenses following Dom’s injury. Friday’s game will kickoff at 7 p.m., with 50/50 raffle tickets sold throughout the first half. The winning ticket will be announced after the conclusion of the 3rd quarter.
