The Wautoma/Wild Rose girls’ soccer team started their week hosting Berlin on April 28.
The game started with Berlin bringing the pressure. We were able to hold off that pressure almost the first half but Berlin got 2 quick goals past keeper Ella Tratz. At halftime, we reevaluated how we were playing and brought the pressure in the second half. On a penalty kick Laynie Vaughan got one past Berlin keeper. Bailey Enriquiz and Mackenzie Kelly got a shot on goal. With 5 minutes left in the game, Laynie Vaughan got the game tied 2-2. Berlin, still keeping the pressure on, got a goal in 2 minutes left for a narrow 3-2 win over Wautoma/Wild Rose. The defense kept the ball away from keeper Ella Tratz, who had 3 saves.
On April 29 the team hosted a conference matchup with Amherst. The start of this game was a bit unexpected, yet there was a strong start.
We were moving the ball well as a team. Laynie Vaughan got one-on-one opportunity with the Amherst keeper and got one past her. Just a few minutes before halftime a nice assist from Bailey Enriquiz to Laynie Vaughan to put Wautoma/Wild Rose up 2-0 at halftime.
Several shots on goal by Laura Babcock and Bailey Enriquez. Early in the second half, Lidia Thomspon had a beautiful through ball past the defender to Laynie Vaughan who added another goal for the team. With just 8 minutes left in the game, Amherst finally scored a goal. Wautoma/Wild Rose was still able to secure a 3-1 victory. Becca Button played in goal with 4 saves for the game. Great comeback from the day before and another conference win!
In 2024, Wautoma/Wild Rose held a 6-13 overall record. The team improved its 2025 record to 6-4 overall, keeping it on track to improve from last year’s record. There are still plenty of chances to improve their record, with Wautoma/Wild Rose hosting Adam-Friendship on Friday, May 9, for their next round of action.
