School Board Elections: Why these Elections aren’t like other Political Races

Posted

In an era where the political climate is significantly present, it is easy to assume that all elections and governing entities operate the same; however, it is important to understand that school board elections stand apart from other local, state, and federal elections.
Unlike partisan elections, where candidates campaign on political platforms and policy agendas, school board members are elected to serve as stewards of public education. Pushing a personal or ideological agenda is counterproductive to the role of the school board, as ultimately, the board’s job is to act as one entity in the best interest of students, staff, families, and the overall community.
Therefore, rather than focusing on any sort of political agenda or platform, we spoke with the three school board candidates about their motivations, priorities, and views on their role if they were to serve on the school board.

School board elections are on April 1, 2025. Two seats are open with three candidates running.

The critical takeaway with school board elections is that school board races aren’t about political views or stances. It is the role of the school board to set forth the mission, vision, and strategic plan for the school district. School boards do this most effectively when members of the governing body commit to serving in a nonpartisan, student-focused capacity. School boards do this most effectively when members of the governing body listen, learn, and make informed decisions in the best interest of stakeholders.
