Village of Coloma finalizes plans for Chicken Chew

Posted

“It’s a small town at its’ finest,” summed up Village Clerk Brenda Walker as the Coloma Village Board finalized preparations for the annual Chicken Chew during their regular meeting on May 29.

The meeting opened with the owners of Coloma Liquor, who brought up parking concerns on Front St. The village has been getting busier on the weekends with the various events and businesses in the area. During the remodeling process, they questioned the possibility of a reserved parking sign or a 15-minute parking sign for Coloma Liquor. Concerns about enforcement and other businesses wanting the same option were brought up by the board. Public works may need to look at other options for parking in the village, but Village President Tara Runnels suggested adding a sign that lets drivers know that there is available parking in the back of the building.

Deputy Steve Kasubaski informed the board that the AED in the squad car needs to be updated to comply with the Waushara County EMS system to prevent a lapse of care. The board approved the $2,400 purchase as long as the Township of Coloma (which shares the responsibility of the department) would split the cost.

Kasubaski also questioned if the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church would like a new sign from a recent car accident. A driver had crashed into the cemetery fence, which also took out the Prince of Peace sign. The board will reach out to see if they would like to be added to the accident report.

The village has been hard at work getting the Coloma Community Park ready for summer. New ceilings and lighting were installed in the park shelter. The tennis court (which will be open for tennis and pickleball) will also be completed by Chicken Chew. The Storywalk should also be open and ready just in time for the event.

The next regular meeting of the board will take place a week earlier on Thursday, June 19 due to Chicken Chew.
