Penguins beat Marion-Tigerton in first conference game, 15-12 Print E-mail

The Tri-County football team traveled Marion-Tigerton for the first CWC conference game on Sept. 5 against the Thundercats. The Penguins won against Marion-Tigerton 15-12 in a defensive battle.

The Penguins kicked off to start the game, and were able to force a fumble on Marion-Tigerton’s first play of the game. Cordell Sharp was able to recover the fumble in Marion-Tigerton territory. Key runs by Dylan Nigh and a fourth down reception by Luke Marinack set up a Brock Akkerman 7 yard touchdown run. After a Zac Truehl extra point, the Penguins were leading 7-0.

It was a long eventful night as the Wild Rose Ladycats fought tooth and nail with paws and claws to the very end of a five-game volleyball match with the Nekoosa Lady Papermakers on Sept. 4, and wound up victorious, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 26-28, 19-17).

“For having a young team, we battled back through adversity, which only makes us a better team,” said Coach Jason Kirby. “This is step two. We never, ever gave up, even when we were behind.”

The Wautoma/Wild Rose Cross Country boys’ and girls’ teams competed at the 11-team Mosinee Invitational on Sept. 2 held at the Nine Mile Recreation Area near Rib Mountain.

The Wautoma/Wild Rose Girls team took home fourth place out of 11 schools with Lakeland High School winning the girls team title followed by Mosinee.

Hornets defeat Lodi on the road, 26-7 Print E-mail

On Sept. 5 the Wautoma Hornets traveled to Lodi to face the Blue Devils in their perennial SCC – Capitol North contest. Wautoma was able to come out on top against Lodi for the first time since 2007, winning the game 26-7.

To date, Lodi has essentially owned the matchup, boasting just one loss to the Hornets since 2007. The Hornets along with Head Coach Mike Klieforth were looking to turn the tables on Friday night.

Wild Rose defeats Blackhawks in home opener, 48-28 Print E-mail

The Wild Rose Wildcats rose to the occasion as they clawed up 467 yards of offense to capture a 48-28 win over the Port Edwards Blackhawks during the Sept. 5 home football game.

Wild Rose ate up a lot of clock with it’s first possession of the game, getting 5, 5, and 8 yard runs from Marcus Kasuboski, while Jeremy Lesniak put in 18 and 10 yard runs. Turner Waller added an 11 yard catch as the Wildcats found themselves near the end zone. Lesniak finished the drive with a 1 yard carry to score. A missed PAT left the hosts with a slight 7-6 deficit with 3:55 remaining in the opening period.

The Westfield/Montello varsity cross-country teams competed at Deerfield on Sept. 4. The boys finished the meet in fourth place with 166 points, while the girls placed 12th with 273 points.

In the match-up against the Ripon Tigers on Sept. 4, the Wautoma boys soccer team played tough defense throughout the game. The Hornets lost to the Tigers 2-1.

Wautoma’s only goal came from the Hornet’s Captain Jonathan Duarte off a penalty kick in the first half.
