The Games We Play:

Time-Wasters Or Strategic Tools

Posted

Dear Reader,

When I was young, gaming meant dropping a coin into a pinball machine or, later on, playing Pac-Man and Pong. These simple games were a far cry from today’s complex digital worlds. Now, on flights or in waiting rooms, I see people glued to their screens, playing Word Solitaire and other mind teasers. Many think these games keep their minds sharp, staving off dementia in later years. But I can’t help but wonder: Are these games more than unproductive time-wasters?

My grandsons are drawn to more intense digital realms, where they engage in city brawls and battle against endless waves of bad guys. They win some, lose some, and, more often than not, find themselves strategizing their next attack to live another round. It’s easy to dismiss these games as frivolous or even harmful. After all, they occupy hours that could be spent outdoors, reading, or building something tangible. But maybe there’s more to the story.

Could it be that these games are sharpening their minds, fostering strategic thinking, and teaching them to navigate complex challenges? Or are they merely addictions, designed to keep them tethered to screens at the expense of real-world experiences and deeper purpose?

It’s a question worth asking: Are we losing valuable time, or are we, in some odd way, training ourselves for a world that increasingly values quick thinking, adaptability, and, yes, a warrior-like mentality? Are these games shaping our lives in meaningful ways, or are they just another form of distraction in a world already overflowing with them?

In the end, perhaps the bigger question isn’t just about the games but about what we value in life. Do we want to cultivate real skills, real connections, and real experiences, or are we content with virtual victories that fade as soon as we put down the controller?
