Ruth Tubbs celebrated her 98th birthday at Heartland House in Wautoma on Feb. 19.
She was born in 1928 as one of the eight siblings in the Town of Chili, Wisconsin. Rita married Bernard Bender and had three children, Phil, Mike, and Diane. She remarried to Clifford Tubbs in 1956 and had two more children, Rita and Doug.
Clifford was a truck driver, and together they owned the Laundromat in Plainfield. Later, they purchased the George and Hazel Osterhaus farm, where they raised potatoes, strawberries, sweet corn, pumpkins, and squash. You may remember the family from the produce they sold straight from their garage for over 20 years.
Ruth would also serve as the postmaster for over 30 years and on the Plainfield Village Board for eight years. She is also a life-time member of the Methodist Church of Plainfield and sung in the homemakers’ choir for many years. Her favorite hymn is “Shine Jesus”, which always makes her smile.
Ruth shared one of her tips for a long, healthy life. Every morning, she would walk three miles with her friends. She also loved to bake and made sure everyone got their favorite cake on their birthday.
