The Lady Eagles knew they would have a tough game on their hands Friday night, Dec. 13, as they hosted the Pittsville Panthers for their third conference matchup of the season.
The Panthers, led by Senior Guard and reigning Central Wisconsin South Player of the Year Reese Grimm, entered the game just like the Lady Eagles - undefeated in the conference. Grimm recently became the third player from the Pittsville girls program to surpass 1,000 points and is on track to break the school’s scoring record in her next few games.
From the beginning of the game Grimm and company put the pressure on with a full court press defense, harassing the Eagles guards from the moment they inbounded the ball and continued to do so for the majority of the game.
The tactic ultimately proved insufficient as the Almond-Bancroft girls repeatedly exploited the spread out defense for quick points and wide open shots that more than offset the 19-12 turnover ratio and handful of easy points Pittsville won for their efforts. The game remained close until midway through the second half when the Lady Eagles finally pulled ahead for good, ending the game at 44-30.
Aaliyah Newby led the Eagles scoring efforts with 14 points and Mya Dernbach turned in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
The Lady Eagles play their next home game on Friday. Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. when they’ll host the Pacelli Cardinals for their 4th conference matchup of the season and their final home game of the year.
