Impressive fourth-quarter showing isn’t enough to secure a Hornet win on Homecoming

Posted

The Wautoma Hornets welcomed the Wisconsin Dells Chiefs for the second time last week, this time on the football field for their 2026 Homecoming matchup, ultimately falling 21-42.

The Hornet defense was aggressive against the run, forcing the Chiefs to turn to their passing game. Wisconsin Dells got off to a quick start and took a 35-7 lead into halftime. Wautoma’s lone score of the first half came on a quarterback rush by senior Peyton Pica, following a strong drive that included completions to sophomore wide receivers Zaden Huser and Parker Grenier. The Chiefs added another touchdown in the second half, extending their lead to 42-7, but the Hornets continued to battle in the fourth quarter. A Pica to Grenier pass put up 6 for the Hornets before the Hornet defense recovered a fumble late in the game. Taking over with excellent field position, senior Mason Dobrecevich rushed for the final touchdown of the night. A successful 2-point conversion brought the score to 21-42 with just over a minute remaining.

Following the loss, the Hornets are now 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the South-Central Conference. They will travel to Waupun on Friday, 10/2 for another SCC matchup.
