The Wautoma Boys Basketball team played Mauston on Jan. 24 in an SCC Conference matchup.
Mauston got out to an early lead with their hot shooting. Mauston’s defense kept the Hornet offense in check as they built a 20 point lead going into halftime with a score of 40-20.
In the second half, the Hornet’s scored the first six points to cut the lead to 14 points. Mauston pushed the lead back to 20 points. The Hornet defense began to stiffen and the offense began to click. The Hornet’s battled and chipped away as they were able to get the Mauston’s lead down to 2 with a minute to go in the game. Mauston’s lead was three points with just 4 seconds left. Wautoma got the rebound off a missed free throw and was able to get a desperation 3 point shot off that hit the backboard and bounced off the rim as Mauston held on for a 66-63 win.
The Hornets were led in scoring by Junior Skyler Royston with 26 points. Freshman Carson Rose scored 12 points, while senior Taylor Krueger and sophomore Peyton Pica each chipped 10 points. The Hornets were led in rebounding by Pica with 6 and Rose with 5.
