Freemasons and American Legion team up for suicide prevention training

Posted

The Wautoma Freemason in conjunction with the Waushara County American Legion held a session teaching volunteers how to Question, Persuade, and Refer individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. It was a valuable opportunity to learn life-saving skills and making a positive impact in our community.

An anonymous questionnaire from students in Waushara County found that nearly 20% have considered suicide with 11% admitting they have attempted it. Another 21% have indicated they have self-harmed themselves as well.

Topics covered were signs within the youth and adult population of those struggling or in a crisis, the right questions to inquire about the situation, and how to not be afraid to ask people how they are doing. Participants were encouraged to take home a booklet to share with others on how to engage our fellow citizens. Additional copies are available from CAP services. If you or someone you suspect is thinking about suicide, do not hesitate to call 988 where a team is available for help.
