This year, 32 Wisconsin high school athletes were selected to receive the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award, proudly presented by the We Energies Foundation and WPS.
Mya Dernbach of Almond-Bancroft High School was one of this year’s recipients honored with the award. Dernbach is the first female recipient in Almond-Bancroft school history and just the third overall—an amazing accomplishment.
Dernbach, with a 3.97 GPA, is a 10-time letterwinner, including four in volleyball and three in both basketball and softball heading into this spring. She was a two-time team MVP in all three sports. A three-time regional champ in softball, Dernbach was named to the Central Wisconsin-South all-conference first team three times in softball, twice in volleyball and twice in basketball. She was voted conference MVP in both volleyball and basketball her senior year. Dernbach helped the Eagles earn a softball sectional championship her junior season.
She writes, “Nothing is handed to you, if you want something you have to work for it. This lesson was mainly taught to me through sports. I worked harder to become the best version of myself and I saw the results.” Dernbach plans to study kinesiology at UW-Madison this fall.
