The Almond-Bancroft Eagles played host to the Laona/Wabeno Rebels on Jan. 16 as the second part of a double header featuring the girls varsity teams to open the night.
Before the game started Almond-Bancroft took a moment to recognize some major accomplishments senior forward Ayden Phillips logged so far this season. Phillips now holds the schools single game and career scoring and rebounding records, 46 points and 30 rebounds in individual games, 1,027 career rebounds with more logged every week, and more than 2,000 career points. After crossing that scoring threshold in an away game on the 13th Phillips became the 50th player in WIAA history to score 2,000 points in their career. Phillips did not rest on his laurels after the pre-game praise had concluded.
Just moments after securing the tip off for his team Phillips slammed a huge dunk home over the heads of Rebels defenders, sending a clear message that he would be a major presence in this game. That moment seemed to signal the beginning of the onslaught as the Eagles jumped out to a 20-0 lead to start the game. The visiting Rebels never mounted a comeback from there and the game ended in a 77-36 rout with 4 Eagles players scoring in double digits.
Phillips led his team with another double-double, adding 24 points and 15 rebounds. Clarence Pratt added 16 points while Brody Dernbach and Davis Dernbach each tacked on 11.
The Eagles play their next home game on Friday, Jan. 24 as they host the Tri-County Penguins for another varsity double-header. The boys team plays first this time at 5:45 p.m. followed by the Lady Eagles at 7:15 p.m.
