The Almond-Bancroft Eagles were eager to redeem themselves as they went back to bat against the defending champion, the Belmont Braves, in the Division 5 WIAA State Softball Championship on June 13 at Goodman Softball Complex in Madison.
The Eagles, who fell in last year’s championship game to Belmont, were ready for action and pulled away with a 16-8 win for the State title. It was a busy day on the plate, with Almond-Bancroft scoring in every inning and setting a new D5 record of 20 hits in a game.
Sophie Chapa got the ball rolling, hitting it deep into the right-center for the team’s first score of the day. It was a close fight back and forth, but Almond-Bancroft carried the lead throughout. The Lady Eagles finished off with a remarkable seventh inning where they scored six runs.
Pitchers Lexi Carlton and Riya Ceballo shared their appreciation for the community that has been there to support them throughout the season. “We don’t have a big school, so it’s nice to see people come out and watch,” shared Carlton, with Ceballo adding, “We really have a community here at Almond-Bancroft.
All the hard work since last year’s trip to State has come to a satisfying end with a moment that will go down in school history.
