The Wautoma girls’ and boys’ basketball teams double header on Jan. 11 had Hornet fans excited for the action as both teams took a conference win over the Nekoosa Papermakers.
Girls’ Game
The Lady Hornets were originally scheduled to play Friday night, but were called to action a day early due to the inclement weather conditions that hit our area. This did not faze the team, as they went on to score a 71-27 win over the Lady Papermakers.
The Lady Hornets were led by Montana Groskreutz who scored a game high of 31 points, including two 3-pointers along with 4 steals.
Alayna Panich added 16 points to the board with two 3-pointers of her own. Panich also managed to score 2 of 2 free throws and recorded 7 assists, 7 steals, and 6 rebounds.
Bryn Gunderson added 8 points to the board, followed by Bri Buechner with 7 points, Aspen Groskreutz 5 points, and Maddy Meyer and Ally Phillips each with 2 points.
The Lady Hornets are now 10-4 overall for the 2023-24 season. The team is tied with Mauston for second in the South Central Conference with 2-1 record.
Boys’ Game
The Hornets took an early lead in their conference matchup against the Papermakers, ending the first half with a 43-28 lead. While the Hornets did most of their scoring in the first half, the Papermakers were unable to decrease their point gap. Wautoma was able to score a 78-55 conference win over Nekoosa.
Carson Armstrong led the Hornets with 24 points on the board, including 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Peter Idsvoog was able to put up 18 points on the board while impressively making 12 rebounds throughout the game.
Logan Dunn added 10 points to the win with 10 rebounds of his own. Joe Ascher and Landon Kalata each scored 8 points, followed by Landon Keller with 7 points of his own.
The Hornets are now 7-5 overall for the 2023-24 season. The Hornets also advanced to third in the South Central Conference with a 2-1 record this season.
