Wautoma falls to Xavier in first round
The Wautoma Hornets football team traveled to Xavier to take on the Hawks in the first round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 Playoffs on Oct. 20. After a quick stop by the Hornet defense, Wautoma’s offense took the ball 82 yards, first on a 42-yard pass play from Ryan Lois to Dustin Farrar, and then on tough runs by Matthew Kroll who punched in the first touchdown of the game on a 21-yard run.
Lois completed the 2-point conversion pass to Cade Peterson in the corner of the end zone to make the score 8-0 Wautoma.
Xavier answered with a scoring drive of their own, capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run. Their 2-point conversion tied the game up, 8-8.
After a Wautoma punt, the Hawks scored again on another run early in the second quarter to make the score 16-8 Xavier. The Hornets went on to drive the ball down the field on key runs by Bryce Zuehlke and Matt Kroll, and finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Lois.
The rest of the first half was all Xavier. With 6 minutes left in the second quarter, Xavier completed a 31-yard touchdown pass. The Hawks capitalized on two Wautoma turnovers, scoring a 25-yard touchdown run and a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Hornets tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter, but a fumble and an interception hurt their chances. Xavier added to their lead on a 4-yard touchdown run.
