Wautoma senior Anja Blija went up for a kill during the third set of the non-conference home game against Laconia on Sept. 5. The Hornets went on to defeat the Spartans in the third set, 29-27, but would ultimately fall to Laconia, 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 27-29, 25-22). Blija led the Hornets with 16 kills.

Wautoma falls to Spartans, 3-1

After dropping the first two sets, 25-19, 25-13, to the visiting non-conference Laconia Spartans on Sept. 5, the Wautoma girls volleyball team came back in the third to keep their hopes of a win alive.

Coming off the momentum the 29-27 third set win, the Hornets were looking for a win in the fourth to bring the match to a five-set thriller. Even though the energy was there, the Spartans proved to be too much for Wautoma, defeating the Hornets 25-22 in the fourth to secure the 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 27-29, 25-22) victory.

Throughout the match the Hornets brought forth tough offensive skills with senior Anja Blija leading the team with 16 kills. Following Blija was freshman Hattie Bray with 7 kills and junior Maddie Weisensel recording 6.

Senior Tori Gonzalez proved to be an asset for the Hornets as she provided 22 assists in the game, while Madison Haumschild scored 7 points on aces followed by Weisensel with 4 aces.
