Wautoma High School senior libero Maddie Peterman passes the ball to the setter during the fourth set of the South Central Conference home game against the Westfield Pioneers on Sept. 14. The Hornets went on to defeat the Pioneers 3-1 (25-16, 25-27, 25-14, 25-23) to secure their first SCC win of the season.

Hornets win over Westfield, 3-1

After dropping two conference games against Adams-Friendship and Nekoosa in five-sets, the Wautoma girls volleyball team was looking for their first South Central Conference win when they hosted the Westfield Pioneers on Sept. 14.

Prepared for anything, the Hornets dominated early and often throughout the entire game thanks in part to the offensive prowess from seniors Tori Gonzalez, Anja Blija, Madison Haumschild, Karley Reetz and Katy Bray, juniors Maddy Weisensel, Mackenzie Ralls and Karlie Cruz and freshman Hattie Bray

After winning the first set 25-16, the Hornets found the score neck and neck in the second. The Pioneers were able to tie the game at 1-1 after mustering enough offense to overpower the Hornets for the 27-25 second set win.

It would be the defense that would prove key for the Hornets in the third, with senior libero Maddie Peterman, H. Bray, Blija, Weisensel and Brianna Jander working hard to dig up anything that came in their way to secure the 25-14 third set win.

Heading into the fourth, the Hornets were looking to seal their SCC victory early. With a number of service points coming from H. Bray and Ralls, Wautoma would end up the winners of the fourth and deciding set, walking away with the 3-1 (25-16, 25-27, 25-14, 25-23) SCC victory.
