Wautoma High School announces Buchkowski as Student of the Month

Subhead

Deakin Buchkowski was recently announced as the Student of the Month at Wautoma High School. The following statement was given by the Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education Department.

The Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education Departments would like to nominate Deakin Buchkowski for student of the month.

Deakin has proven to be an exceptional student in his instrumental music classes this year. In both jazz ensemble and concert band he leads the students around him with his positive attitude and confidence. In classes he encourages everyone to play loud and many students have identified Deakin as being a leader in the band, someone they look up to, and someone who inspires them to be brave in their own playing.

When faced with difficult solos and challenging parts Deakin approaches his music systematically. He breaks it down to small sections and learns it section by section. He has a growth mindset and knows that if he follows his process he will be successful.

Deakin is also a student who goes above what is required of him. Recently he was spotted finishing up Beowulf (reading beyond the section required of the class) simply because he doesn’t like to leave a book unfinished.

Deakin has also shown a great deal of motivation in athletic development this year; even on days he does not necessarily care for the skills being expected of him. He has also developed into a strong leader for his peers. Deakin is frequently heard reminding his peers to clean up their lifting areas, along with holding them accountable in terms of work ethic. Deakin’s ability to be upfront with his peers is notable, as most would shy away from this in fear of being responded to negatively. His constant willingness to help move equipment before and after class is greatly appreciated as it leaves transition times less chaotic.

Deakin is willing to meet challenges, motivate and lead peers, and go beyond what is expected of him. For all of these reasons we feel he would be well deserving of student of the month.”
