Westfield Pioneers claim 42-6 homecoming victory

The Westfield Pioneer fans filled the stands for an action packed Oct. 7 homecoming game. The Pioneers pulled off a 42-6 homecoming victory over the Montello/Princeton/Green Lake Phoenix’s.

The first quarter started slow for both teams, with no scoring action taking place until there was 3:06 left in the quarter. Ty Monfries completed a 4 yard touchdown run for a 6-0 Pioneer lead. Kash Kangas was able to get the Pioneers another 6 points after a touchdown run, giving the Pioneers a 12-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The Phoenix’s scored with a 1 yard touchdown run by Seth Mehling gave the team a chance to close the deficit, 6-12. The Phoenix’s attempted to get in another touchdown, but an intercepted pass by Logan Peterson was made by Westfield’s Tommy Huff at the Pioneer 9 yard line. Kangas had the chance to complete a 14 yard pass to Emmitt Houslet for a Pioneer touchdown, getting the home team ahead 18-6 with 2:27 on the clock. Braden Lentz’s onside kick was recovered by Gatlin Mortimer, giving Westfield the ball at the 50 yard line. This gave Kangas the chance he needed for an incredible 50 yard pass to Ervin Meiller for another touchdown. Kangas completed a pass to Huff for the 2-point conversion, making the score 26-6 at halftime.

Kangas completed a 2 yard pass to Meiller for a touchdown in the third quarter. Kangas ran for the 2-point conversion, setting the score for the third quarter at 34-6.

Westfield was quick to score in the final quarter, with Kangas completing another amazing pass for 65 yards to Huff with 11:42 left in the game. Kangas’ pass to Meiller gave the Pioneers the 2-point conversion, giving Westfield their homecoming victory 42-6.

The Pioneers received 3 penalties for 25 yards.

Kash Kangas completed 11 of 17 passes for a total of 253 yards, 1 interception, 2 two-point conversions, and 4 touchdowns. Kangas ran the ball 11 times for 62 yards and 1 touchdown.

Tommy Huff received 4 passes for 164 yards, 1 two-point conversion, and 2 touchdowns. Ervin Meiller received 2 passes for 16 yards, 1 two-point conversion, and a touchdown. Sam Berruecos received 1 pass for 14 yards, Ty Monfries 1 for 14 yards and Emmitt Bourman-Houselet 2 for 33 yards and 1 touchdown.

Ethan Stolpa ran the ball 4 times for 23 yards, Monfries 11 for 56 yards and 1 touchdown, and Gatlin Mortimer 1 for 2 yards.
