The Wautoma Hornet softball team fell to the visiting Adams-Friendship Green Devils 13-6 in a huge SCC conference battle on April 27.
Adams opened the game up scoring on a Gribble two-out RBI single as lead-off hitter Drankiewicz walked and scored to make it 1-0. Wautoma answered right back to knot it up at ones with a Brianna Buechner HBP and scoring immediately on a Sydney Dunn RBI double. Neither team scored in the second, however, both teams piled up runs in the 3rd inning with Adams tacking on eight compared to Wautoma’s four to make it 9-5.
Adams massive inning started with a walk, Kirsenlohr RBI double, Gribble RBI triple, a strike out and then sloppy Lady Hornet defense on three errors with two walks and a hit sprinkled in. The Lady Hornets struck right back with Liv Weiss reaching on a lead-off error, Ava Stahl single, another Buechner HBP, Dunn two-RBI single and Bryn Gunderson two-out RBI single. Wautoma would decrease the deficit to 9-6 in the 4th inning on Stahl RBI single and crossing home once again with Sydney Dunn providing the two-out RBI single.
However, the Lady Green Devils piled three runs on in the 5th inning and one in the 6th inning to create a nice cushion as Wautoma was unable to score in the latter innings. Liv Cieslik took the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings, 3 K’s, 5 BB’s, 6 hits and five earned runs while Larissa Piechowski provided middle relief going 1 1/3 innings, one hit, a walk, HBP and two earned runs. Ava Butt pitched the seventh tallying a strike out.
The Lady Hornets outhit the Lady Green Devils nine to seven but the extra free passes and errors factored into play. Wautoma was led by Stahl (3x4, SB, 2 runs), Dunn (3x4, 4 RBI’s, run), Gunderson (2x4, RBI) along with Buechner (1x1, 2 HBP’s, 2 runs, sac). The Green Devils hitting came from Kirsenlohr (2x4, 2 RBI’s, BB, SB, run), Gribble (2x4, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI’s, run) and Graniser (2x3, BB, SB, run).
Wautoma softball is 8-7 overall and 2-2 in SCC action following the loss.
