Wautoma Hornets win close game against Winneconne Wolves

The Wautoma Hornets were able to make their way to the top of the scoreboard in a close 66-63 victory against the Winneconne Wolves on Dec. 6.

Winneconne was able to start the game in their favor, with a 3-pointer from Austin Wiediemeier the Wolves a 5-2 advantage. A block from Peter Idsvoog gave the Hornets a chance to get the ball back to their side of the court. Carson Armstrong closed the gap with a 3-pointer leaving the Hornets only down by 4 points. The Hornets kept up their pace with the Wolves, with the score eventually tying up 18-18. Cohen Reetz broke the tie with a 3-pointer for the Winneconne Wolves. This did not stop the Hornets from taking a close 39-36 lead going into the second half.

Hornet fans stayed on the edge of their seats as both teams controlled the ball on the court. Wautoma Hornets kept the ball moving to the basket, adding 2-pointers to the board. Hornet defense kept the ball from moving to the Wolves’ basket, including 2 blocks from Joseph Ascher. The 2-pointers from Ascher also helped keep Wautoma ahead by 2-points for most of the second half until 3-pointer from Logan Dunn gave the Hornets a 62-56 advantage. Brett Salm secured the lead with another 3-pointer for the Hornets, giving the Hornets a 9-point lead. The Wolves were unable to recover from the deficit, giving the Hornets the close 66-63 victory.

Joseph Ascher was the top scorer for the Hornets, putting 20 points on the board. Ascher also recorded 3 rebounds and assists, along with 1 steal and block. Carson Armstrong followed closely with 19 points of his own, including five 3-pointers and 3 rebounds and assists. Brett Salm and Peter Idsvoog each had 10 points, followed by Landon Kalata scoring 5, and Logan Dunn scoring 4. Salm ended with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Idsvoog recorded 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Dunn was able to record 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. Kalata had 3 rebounds.

This was the Hornets’ first win of the season.
