Wautoma Hornets sting Westfield Pioneers with homecoming win

The Wautoma Hornets stung the Westfield Pioneers for a 42-26 homecoming win on Oct. 14.

The rainy game got off to a slow start, with no scoring from either team in the first quarter. The Hornets came alive in the second quarter, with a 24 yard touchdown pass completed by Carson Armstrong to Christian Weiss. Weiss got an extra point for a 7-0 lead over the Pioneers with 11:55 on the clock.

 

The Pioneers responded with their own touchdown pass for 49 yards from Kash Kangas to Tommy Huff. The Pioneers 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving them behind 6-7. The Hornets kept their momentum going, with Armstrong completing a 2 yard touchdown run with an extra point completed by Weiss. With only 3 seconds left in the half, Armstrong managed to complete a 5 yard touchdown pass to Brady Abitz giving the Hornets a 21-6 lead going into the second half of the game.

Westfield did not let their deficit slow them down, with Kangas completing a 57 yard touchdown pass to Ty Monfries. Determined to catch up to the Hornets, Kangas completed another touchdown pass for 15 yards to Sam Berruecos-Morales, closing the Hornets’ lead 18-21. Weiss got ahold of the ball for a 10 yard touchdown run, and gave the Hornets an extra point with 2:40 left in the quarter. Kangas ran the ball 2 yards with the Pioneers 2-point conversion attempt successful, making the score 28-26 in favor of the Hornets going into the final quarter.

The Hornets did not slow down going into the final quarter of the game, with a 69 yard touchdown pass from Armstrong to Weiss. Weiss’s extra point was successful, giving the Hornets a 35-26 advantage with 9:18 left in the game. Another 69 yard touchdowns pass was completed by Armstrong to Weiss. The extra point was successful, giving the Hornets their 42-26 homecoming victory.

 

Westfield quarterback Kash Kangas completed 11 of 19 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tommy Huff received 3 passes for 81 yards, Ty Monfries 2 for 43 yards, Sam Berruecos-Morales 2 for 51 yards, Ervin Meiller 3 for 10 yards, and Emmitt Bourman-Houslet 1 for 2 yards. Monfries carried the ball 15 times for 101 yards, Kangas 10 for 23 yards and a touchdown, and Houslet 1 for 3 yards.

 

Wautoma quarterback Carson Armstrong completed 13 of 23 passes for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns. Christian Weiss received the ball 6 times for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns, Brady Abitz 2 for 14 yards and 1 touchdown, Landon Keller 2 for 25 yards, Brett Salm 1 for 20 yards, Landon Kalata 1 for 16 yards and Clayton Wilcox 1 for 3 yards. Salm carried the ball 21 times for 206 yards and 1 touchdown, Armstrong 2 or -2 yards and a touchdown, Wilcox 6 for 21 yards, and Kalata 6 for 11 yards.
