Little meets big in Wautoma Flag/Varsity scrimmage

Subhead

After the Wautoma victory over Poynette on Sept. 9th, the Wautoma football team took some time out of their afternoon on Sept. 10 to join the Youth Flag Football team for a fun filled scrimmage.

The Wautoma Area Youth Football Club has a flag football team for kids in grades K-2, which currently has 10 young boys registered. An opportunity presented itself to bring together these two teams for a mini scrimmage which turned out to be a roaring success. The WAYFC “mini cheerleaders” were also present, representing girls in grades K-2 in the district. They had the opportunity to practice calling out and cheering on their teammates and even a few stunts.

The flag football team was split up, along with the boys on Wautoma Varsity to make an Orange and a Black squad. The rainy and windy weather did not deter the athletes, however. In good sport, each flag football player got the opportunity for a touchdown and got the opportunity to practice their passing and receiving skills. Angelo Garcia, kindergartener, even broke through multiple opponents with a run up the middle to score for the Black Squad.

The young men on the varsity team showed tremendous leadership skills and teamwork during the short 60 minutes of time on the field. Many of the WAYFC parents mentioned how they think the varsity players may have had more fun than the youth on the field. WHS Football Coaches Adam Vaughan and Steve Kasubaski were very impressed with the role model mentality that the young men showed.

After all was said and done, Bo Michalski, a kindergartener at Redgranite Elementary School, could be heard telling his mother, Amanda, that “it was one of the best days of my life playing with real Hornets”.
