Sherman Hamilton

Sherman F. Hamilton, a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, and all-around great guy, passed away on September 24, 2023, at the age of 88. He was born in Adams County, to LaVerne and Trumane Hamilton, and his life was a beautiful mix of love, laughter, and community spirit.
Sherman was born in Adams County, but he later moved to Beloit, where he graduated from Beloit Memorial High. After high school, he headed back to the family farm, and it was there that he met the love of his life, JoAnn (Johnson). They were married on April 23, 1960, and together, they shared an amazing 63-year journey of love, partnership, and countless memories.
Sherman spent a good chunk of his working life at Consolidated Papers in Biron, putting in 36 years of hard work and dedication. He was known for his strong work ethic and always giving his best.
But Sherman was more than just a dedicated worker; he was a community champion. He was a charter member of the Hancock Lions Club and even served as Secretary/Treasurer and Zone Chairman. His commitment earned him both the Melvin Jones Fellowship and the Knight for Sight Fellowship. He was actively involved in the county 4-H program. He was a club leader, superintendent of the Livestock barn, and was instrumental in starting the Junior Livestock Auction. His contributions earned him a spot in the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame – an honor that spoke volumes about his dedication.
Sherman's love for his community extended to the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department, where he proudly served for over 30 years; and for 20 of those, he served as the Department Chief. He also was a Village Board member and Village Board President, working hard to make Hancock a better place for everyone. He received the Waushara Co. Citizen of the Year due to his commitment to his community. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Hancock.
But it wasn't all about work for Sherman. He also made time for the kids. He coached Little League and even drove a school bus. His impact on the lives of young people in the community was immeasurable.
Above all, Sherman was a loving and devoted family man. He leaves behind a legacy of love and support for his children: Sharlene Hamilton, Janice (Gary) Grenier, Jim (JoAnne) Hamilton, and Sheryl Koosmann; his grandchildren: Kevin Grenier, Tim Grenier, Ashley (Jeremy) Podoll, Amanda Hamilton (Brian Leofilos), Casey (Brandon) Sackett, and Alyssa (BJ) Beahm, along with 15 great-grandkids – they were his pride and joy.
Sherman is survived by his amazing wife, JoAnn, after a remarkable 63 years of marriage. He also leaves behind his brother, Harry; and sisters-in-law, Sandra, Patricia, Roma, and Mildred. Further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Jeff Koosmann; sister, Donna; brothers, Carl, Larry, Ron, Lyle; brothers-in-law, Gaynes, Elwyn, Phillip, Arden; and sisters-in-law, Jeanne, Gwen, and Diane.
Services will be held at Stahl’s Funeral Home, Plainfield, WI on Saturday, September 30. Visitation 11-1, service, graveside burial and luncheon to follow. In true Sherm fashion, in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting monetary donations so that we can continue to spread his community spirit by making donations to his favorite organizations in his memory.
Sherman F. Hamilton was a man who lived life to the fullest, always with a smile on his face and a helping hand to offer. He touched the hearts of so many and will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace, knowing he made the world a better place.
