Eagles squeak out 55-53 playoff win

The No. 3 ranked Almond-Bancroft Eagles hosted the No. 6 ranked Port Edwards Blackhawks on March 2 for the second round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional playoffs and their final home game of the 2017-18 season.

The Eagles quickly took the lead and continued to hold it for the remainder of the first half as they went into the locker room with a 25-21 lead.

The two teams alternated scoring in the second half where the Blackhawks came back to tie the game with under a minute left to play, 53-53.

With 4.6 seconds left to play, Almond-Bancroft junior Zach Bunders scored to give the Eagles a two-point lead. As the Blackhawks inbounded the ball, Bunders fouled Port Edwards’ leading scorer, Addison Gibbs, with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

Fortunately for the Eagles, Gibbs missed both free throws and the Eagles claimed the 55-53 regional playoff victory. With the win, the Eagles moved on to the regional championship game at Assumption on March 3, where they took on the No. 2 ranked Royals.
