The Waupaca Community Theatre is announcing auditions for its summer 2024 musical production of the sci-fi horror musical “Little Shop Of Horrors”.
The show, with its delectable and electrifying pop/rock score, is based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman and features book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, the creative duo responsible for the Disney scores to “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty & The Beast”, and “Aladdin”.
“Little Shop Of Horrors” follows Seymour Krelborn, a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey 2” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood. As Audrey 2 grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey 2’s extra-terrestrial origins and true drive for world-domination.
Menken’s music, composed in the style of early 1960’s rock & roll, doo-wop and Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, “Mushnik and Son”, “Dentist”, “Feed Me” and “Suddenly, Seymour”.
The cast of characters includes: “Seymour” - a mid-twenties insecure, naive, put-upon florist’s clerk. “Audrey” — the bleached-blond, secret love of Seymour’s life. “Orin Scrivello” - a tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. “Mr. Mushnik” — Seymour and Audrey’s shop boss. “Ronnette”, “Crystal” & “Chiffon” - Three female street urchins who are participants in the action and a Greek Chorus outside of it. Young, hip and smart, they sing in gospel harmony throughout the production. “The Voice of Audrey 2” — provided by an actor/singer on an offstage microphone. Think of a voice that is a street-smart, funky, conniving villain. Additional ensemble roles include Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, Patrick Martin, street bums, and shop customers.
“Little Shop Of Horrors” opened off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre in 1982 and eventually made its Broadway debut at the Virginia Theatre in 2003. The revival included beefed up orchestrations for the larger theatre adding reeds, trumpets and percussion to the original 5-piece combo.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 9-5 p.m. at the Waupaca Middle School’s Knoepfel Auditorium. Those auditioning should prepare a short section of a song, preferably from a Broadway show. An accompanist will be present. WCT is looking for talented and diverse performers of all ethnicities over the age of 16 for all roles in this production.
Rehearsals will take place Monday through Thursday evenings during June and July. Performance dates are July 27, 28 and August 1, 2, 3 and 4. Justin Schilling will direct the production and performances will be accompanied by a full pit orchestra conducted by John Kelley.
