On September 16, 2023 heaven gained one of its most hardworking angels. Nola Sullivan Sell passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.
She was born to Hank and Thelma Sherman, where she was raised in a large loving family in Bancroft, Wisconsin. She attended high school in Plainfield. Nola was a loyal Tri County Penguin. She treasured her high school friends, remaining in touch with them throughout her entire life. Nola never missed a class reunion. She looked forward to her girlfriend group of monthly lunches and enjoyed every one of their girl’s weekend get-aways.
Nola married her first love, David Sullivan. They moved to Wild Rose and had three children, Kelly Gitter, Terry Sullivan and Corky Sullivan.
From the beginning, Nola took care of everyone around her, never thinking of herself first. She had a very successful 32-year career as an Assistant Librarian with the Wild Rose School District and was the cheerleading coach for 25 of those years. Nola eventually went on to teach herself how to be the Computer Tech Guru when the high school added computers. She loved her students dearly and would do anything to help them succeed in life. She was a true giver.
Nola loved her family dearly and made sure everyone was taken care of no matter what the circumstances. She embraced caring for her special needs son, viewing her circumstances as a privilege given to her by God. Nola was truly an angel on this earth. She would never sugar coat the truth or any advice that we needed to hear. She was always there to help solve any problem big or small. Nola motivated us to try our best and to pursue any dreams we wanted to accomplish. She was our biggest supporter and cheerleader no matter what it was that we wanted to do, even if she thought we were crazy. Nola would, without question, give to anyone in need. She was a caregiver to our entire family and to anyone and everyone else that ever reached out to her.
Nola later married her doting husband, Jerry Sell, who loved her, nursed her and cherished her. They found common ground in raising and then embracing each other’s special needs sons. Their families surrounded and supported their strength and love for each other.
Nola is survived by the love her life, husband, Jerry Sell; his children, Kathy (Allan) Blair and Michael; grandchildren, Teaonnie Blair, Gemma (Scott) Blair; his brothers and sisters, Jennifer (Dennis) Bauer, David (Kathy) Sell, Steven (Sally) Sell; her children, Kelly (Tim) Gitter, Terry Sullivan and Colin Sullivan; her grandchildren that will miss her so very much, Hannah Gitter, Jenna Gitter, Catherine (Ian) Grayskull, Jesse Sullivan and Jordyn Sullivan; her brothers and sisters, Lyle Sherman, Harvey Sherman, Jack (Bernie) Sherman, Myra (Cal) Zwetz, and Dale (Joanie) Sherman; her many nieces and nephews, who referred to her as the favorite aunt.
Nola is preceded in death by her late husband, David Sullivan; her parents, Hank and Thelma Sherman; her brothers, Ted Sherman, Jimmy Sherman, Fred Sherman and Pete Prentice; and her sisters, Janet Sherman and Nancy Ostrander.
To say that she will be missed is an understatement. Nola was the glue that kept our family together and the rock that kept us all grounded. She taught us that life isn’t always fair but that we are strong enough to get through anything God puts in our path. Nola taught us to believe in angels and ourselves. We know you are finally resting peacefully with the Lord and that you wouldn’t want us to be sad that you passed but happy that you lived. An angel’s work is never done, and God needed you to come home.
We love you so much forever and always.
A Celebration of Life for Nola will be held at a time and day yet to be announced. The Kessler-Fahrenkrug Funeral Home is assisting the family.
