Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin supports Backpack Nutrition Program
The Community Found-ation of Central Wisconsin recently selected the Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program for grant funding. The Backpack Nutrition Program, offered to students who attend a participating school and qualify for free/reduced lunch programs, provides weekend meals for more than 150 elementary students every week.
The students who participate in the Backpack Nutrition Program carry weekend meals home in their backpacks, which consist of five to six non-perishable food items and fresh food coupons that are redeemable for milk eggs or bread. The program distributes nearly 4,300 items of food to students every month, and is packed by volunteers at Waushara Industries, Inc., Waushara County’s sheltered workshop.
Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin Board Member Dave Williams is pleased with the program’s impact, stating, “It is good to see this program continue to grow. It clearly addresses a need in our community. Not only does it provide weekend meals for students, it helps the folks here at Waushara Industries who work to package the food. It is a real win-win.”
Founded in 1982, the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin serves Waushara and Portage counties with more than 200 different funds. The foundation works to help people, enhance education, enrich arts and culture, contribute to wellness and improve the environment.
The Vision2020 Backpack Nutrition Program is a function of the Waushara Prevention Council, Inc. and depends on the financial support it receives from individuals, churches, businesses, civic and community organizations and grant awards.
