DIY pallet raised garden bed      by Christine Yesko Don’t have a lot of room for a garden, then why not try a “Pallet Raised Garden Bed”?  A pallet planter is an easy eco-friendly, time-saving approach to growing flowers and vegetables side by side.  They cut down on time spent weeding and make plant identification a snap.  The instant rows created by the pallet slats give weeds no place to grow and are the perfect place to write plant names.  Wood pallet garden frames require no assembly, are readily available, and are also usually free.  Although sizes vary somewhat, the standard pallet is 48x40x6 inches.  Raised beds are great for keeping your garden neat and tidy, and using wooden pallets makes building them as easy as laying them out on the ground and adding soil, compost, and plants. Even strawberries grow well in these planters, helping them to stay clean and easier for you to pick.  Make sure to choose pallets that are in good, sturdy condition and have not been treated with chemicals like pesticides.  Ones that are safe are marked with these initials- HT (heat-treated), DB (debarked), and KD (kiln-dried).  Once you have acquired your pallets and made sure they are not treated with any chemicals, there are a few things to help have a garden bed.  Enclose the bottom and sides by stapling a layer of burlap or a piece of landscape fabric to prevent soil from falling through.  Add the garden soil and compost.  Add your plants, water well, and watch your garden grow.  You also could stack a few pallets on top of each other for a taller garden bed.  Some plants that grow well in a pallet bed are annuals, Lettuce, Peppers, Strawberries, Herbs, and cucumbers, but experiment with plants of your choice.  After all, isn’t gardening an experiment?  Have fun, and enjoy the summer.
