Hornet Softball catches a victory against Auburndale

The Wautoma Lady Hornet softball team beat the visiting Auburndale Lady Falcons 7-1 at home on Apr. 4.

Starter Bri Handel and reliever Jalyn Piechowski handled their duties on the rubber to keep the Falcons bats at bay.   Auburndale recorded their lone run to start the game on a single, walk and RBI single with two outs in the top of one.

 

Wautoma knotted it up with a ripped Handel two out triple followed up with a J. Piechowski gap RBI double scoring Handel.  The Hornets would score their “Big 3” in the second all with two outs off of a Braelynn Pica walk – then wild pitch, Bryn Gunderson RBI single – stolen base, Brianna Buechner RBI double – stolen base and Ava Stahl walk with situational scoring bringing in Buechner to make it 4-1.  Wautoma added another run in the 5th inning with a Handel walk – stolen base and scoring on a Sydney Dunn two-out RBI single.

 

The final Hornet scoring happened in 6th inning with a Natalie Perkins dropped third strike advancement to first, Gunderson single, Buechner sacrifice bunt RBI and Stahl RBI single to complete the final score 7-1.   

Handel earned the win for the pitching column going 3 innings,4 K’s, BB, 3 hits and one earned run with J. Piechowski’s extended 4 innings of work striking out 7, 2 BB’s and 2 hits.

Wautoma’s leading hitters were Gunderson (3x3, RBI, SB, run), (Buechner, 2x2, 2 RBI’s, SB, 2 runs) with Stahl, Handel, J. Piechowski and Dunn each having one for the team’s 9 total hits.

 

“I was very proud of the ladies the way they responded to a little team necessary improvement plan and brought selflessness, energy and mental toughness,” Head Coach Tom Butt mentioned.   He also added that the coaching staff is hoping this will steer the ship in the right direction.   

The Lady Hornets improve to 4-0 on the year.
