Defensive player Damean Netzler takes the ball as he heads toward what will be a touchdown on an interception during a game against Waterloo on Aug. 30. Teammates Connor Vandenboomen, Matthew Kroll, and Jon Malnory are prepared to block.

Wautoma Hornets crush Waterloo Pirates

On Aug. 30, the Wautoma Horners played the Waterloo Pirates at home, 49-19.

Wautoma took the opening kickoff and drove the ball down the field with Matt Kroll doing all the damage on runs of 15, 9, and 21 yards. Matt finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge to put Wautoma on the scoreboard first. The Hornet defense quickly put a stop to Waterloo’s first drive, forcing a punt. The second Wautoma drive was much like the first. Ryan Lois put together a couple of athletic runs to match that of Matt Kroll.

Then, Ryan hit Dante Borland with 2 passes to take the Hornets deep inside Pirate territory. Matt Kroll capped off drive two with a 4-yard dive behind the powerful offensive line into the end zone. Waterloo then got on the board with a long pass play into busted coverage. Wautoma came right back with its third touchdown drive.

After some more tough runs by Matt Kroll, Ryan Lois scampered 24-yards through the Waterloo defense, getting into the end zone for another Hornet touchdown in the first quarter. On the next Pirate possession, Waterloo was again able to find the end zone via a long pass. Once again, the Hornets bounced right back. Michael Hernandez led off the next drive with a quick 9-yard blast off the right side. Ryan Lois and the Wautoma offense then faked out the defense as he got outside and outran the Pirates to the end zone.
