County to create obituary index

Anyone doing genealogy research knows the importance of an obituary. The libraries of Waushara County are continuously working to create a database of obituaries in Waushara County, from present day and reaching back in time to 1859.

It is a work in progress, however, which mean there is a gap from 1905 to 1994. The goal is to continue work on this until it is complete. This is available through any of the eight library websites.

Users can search by name and if the obituary appeared in the Argus, and then the date it was published will be listed. A request can be made to receive a copy of the obit though e-mail or US mail.

The library websites also have other great resources available for history research. Look for the “research tools” link, which provides a list of topics, one of them being genealogy. Heritage Quest is a way to access U.S. Census records as well as city directories. This site also offers tips for anyone doing research, from the novice beginner to the experienced investigator.
