Put your compassion into action in March during ‘Red Cross Month’

Giving back to the community as a volunteer is one of the many ways people have persevered through the past year. As March marks Red Cross month as well as the one-year anniversary of the pandemic, the American Red Cross is sharing new ways to give back as a volunteer.

A 2020 study on a rise in volunteer experiences added to LinkedIn profiles shows that more people want to help others during this unprecedented time. Last year, more than 70,000 people across the country became new Red Cross volunteers largely to support urgent disaster and essential blood donation needs. March has been proclaimed as Red Cross Month for nearly 80 years by U.S. Presidents, an ideal time to reflect on the invaluable service volunteers have made locally and nationally.

“In the past year, volunteers from northern Wisconsin and the U.P. have made an incredible difference – from providing relief after wildfires on the West Coast and connecting with people in need after dam failures in Michigan, to helping families after a nearby home fire or welcoming donors at a local blood drive,” said Wendy Savage, Executive Director, American Red Cross – North Central Wisconsin Chapter. “During Red Cross Month in March, we honor this humanitarian spirit and ask you to join us as a volunteer.”

More than 90 percent of the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross is led by volunteers in our communities. In north central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, there are particular volunteer opportunities available in disaster relief, serving veterans and our military, emergency communications, and support of blood drives.

During Red Cross Month, we’re inviting people to find out more about volunteer opportunities that fit their passion and schedule:

Join one of our upcoming Virtual Volunteer Fairs, including two on March 16.

Take a quick quiz to see what volunteer role may work for you.

Your generosity and blood donation can also make a big impact this March.

Support our Disaster Relief efforts at redcross.org/GivingDay. A gift of any size makes a difference to provide shelter, food, relief items, emotional support and other assistance. Your donation will be part of our annual Giving Day on March 24 to aid families in need across the country.

If you’re healthy and feeling well, make an appointment at RedCrossBlood.org. Your donation can make a lifesaving difference for a patient in need. As a thank you, those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma on March 15-26 will receive a Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.
