A 1930’s schoolmarm, Penelope Penny (portrayed by Pat Power of Coloma), offered children and adults an insight into a rural school room of that time period.

The Coloma Area Historical Society in conjunction with the Coloma Public Library summer reading program on July 15 featured seven station presentations at the CAHS Museum and Carriage House, located in the Coloma Village Park.

There were 35 children and 17 adults (parents/chaperones) in attendance. The summer reading program meets at 10 a.m. Thursdays, which will continue through Aug. 5. The program is open to the public, according to Preston de Bolt, director of the Coloma Public Library.

Members of the society manned each station to explain the history of each display. Assisting were: Pat Power, ‘Penelope Penny’ schoolmarm, Station 1; Joe Laubmeier, Royal Cafe, Station 2; Ray Burrows, knot board, Station 3; Julie Lesh, barber shop, Station 4; Sue Semrow, loom, Station 5; Bill Schmudlach, kitchen and laundry, Station 6; Janice Smithers and Judy Wentland - the original 1878 Coloma Corners Spalding House and post office - Station 7.

Sue Apps, president of the CAHS, wrote the scripts for the stations and organized the event, coordinating with Preston de Bolt, director of the Coloma Public Library. Barb Burrows, secretary of CAHS, assisted in planning, publicity and photography for CAHS records. Ron Selenske distributed treats to the attendees at the end of the event.
