Waushara Argus honored by National Newspaper Association
On July 9, Mary Kunasch, senior Waushara Argus publisher, Waushara Argus Production Manager Margie Williams, and the Waushara Argus advertising team, Karla Perkins and Betty Trowbridge, received notification that their 2014 Kids Design and Ad supplement won the Non-Daily National Newspaper Association of America (NNA) Best Mutilple Advertiser Section award for a circluation of less than 5,000 subscribers.
The advertising supplement is published each spring and features fourth grade student artwork from Pleasant View Elementary, Wild Rose Elementary, Coloma Elementary, and Parkside Middle School, Wautoma.
The judges comments stated, “This is AMAZING. Seriously. I love it. I want to hire whoever came up with this idea! A plus for the businesses because their kid-created ads will be well seen (and could be used for future advertising), plus an educational experience for the kids. Brilliant!!”
Upon receiving notification of the award, Kunasch stated, “Kids Design An Ad is one of my favorite sections linking the youth with businesses. It is great to see the business design through the kid’s eyes and their creativity, and color ads so much to their creativity. To be successful it takes the kids to design the ad and the businesses to support the kids and section through purchasing the ads. The staff, Karla Perkins, Betty Trowbridge, and Marge Williams work very diligently to complete this project. I brought the idea to the staff and they have followed through with this special section for several years. I am delighted that we received recognition and great comments from the NNA.”
Williams also received third place for the O’Malley and Foss Greenhouse ad for Best Use of Ad Color, Daily and Non-Daily Division for a circulation of less than 8,000. The judges stated that this ad was a “cute and creative idea; the colors work well together.”
The Kids Design an Ad supplement ran in the Waushara Argus on April 2, 2014, and the O’Malley and Foss Greenhouse ad ran on May 7, 2014. Kunasch and Williams have been invited to attend the NNA’s 129th annual Convention and Trade Show in Charles, MO, from Oct. 1-3 to receive their awards.
