The American Legion Post 343 of Hancock will be conducting an educational event day on how the Honor Flight program works and will be encouraging registration to the program at Ponderosa Pines on Saturday, April 13th from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. The Pines will be donating the facilities and bartenders. The Legion arranged this event to bring information on how our state veterans and guardians can be appreciated on the Washington D.C. trip.
The guest speaker will be Jim Campbell, Co-Founder & VP Marketing for the “Never Forgotten Honor flight”, a hub of the National Honor Flight organization located in Wausau. Additional information can be found at https://neverforgottenhonorflight.com The very first Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. The program was cofounded by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force captain, and Jeff Miller, a small business owner and son of a WWII veteran. It is estimated that a total of over 275,000 nationally have attended the events at the capital. There are more than 125 Honor Flight hubs across the country serving 44 states. Transportation and hotel for the eligible veterans is paid in advance by generous donations.
Waushara County has 1,779 veterans according to the most recent census. All veterans are eligible and each honor flight attendee can take along one guardian. Guardian duties include physically assisting the veterans at the airport, during the flight, and at the memorials. First priority veterans will be members who have served prior to 1975 and terminally ill veterans with the county’s current funding and resources.
The Honor Flight is supported with donations from private individuals to large corporations. The Honor Flight Network receives no government funding and each hub is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. American Legion 343 is in the planning stage for the Saturday, April 13th event with more details coming soon.
American Legion 343 will be conducting a planning meeting Wednesday, March 13th at 7 p.m. at the Hancock Community Center, 420 N Jefferson St, Hancock. More information will be forthcoming. The Legion encourages all branches of military veterans to attend for information on how to become a member of a local chapter.
