Prior to the Jan. 3 Village Board meeting, Wild Rose Police Chief Nate Klapoetke presented Alex Johnston with the 2023 Wild Rose Police Dept. Citizen of the Year Award.
On Nov. 30 a fire broke out on the rooftop of the Wild Rose Middle/High School building while a construction project was taking place. Emergency 9-1-1 calls went out with even the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Dispatch Office receiving the overflow calls.
While the school district awaited the arrival of necessary emergency vehicles, students were evacuated to the elementary school. School employee Alex Johnston saw the smoke and heard screaming coming from the high school portion of the building, and quickly responded to the area where the fire was located. He grabbed fire extinguishers and proceeded up a ladder which had just caught fire in an attempt to put the fire out on the roof and help a construction worker who was badly burned. Alex himself received burns on his hands during his efforts.
Numerous emergency personnel arrived to the scene to finish the work. The injured construction worker was flown to the Madison Burn Unit by ThedaStar, who landed on the football field. The burn victim is said to still be alive, but continues to struggle with his condition.
Alex Johnston was presented with the award for his heroic action.
