Wautoma/Wild Rose Boy Cross Country eke out conference title
The Wautoma/Wild Rose boys cross country team secured their first South Central Conference since joining the conference in 2006 when they surpassed Mauston and Nekoosa by one point on Oct. 14.
The boys team celebrated their conference title with their home fans as Wautoma High School hosted the conference meet at Lake Lucerne Camp and Retreat Center in Neshkoro.
“As a team, we didn’t run our best race of the year, but a win is a win,” stated Wautoma/Wild Rose Head Coach Bob Barbarich. “Our normal 6th and 7th runners had their best races of the year and were able to beat Mauston and Nekoosa’s number 5 runners – that was the difference.”
With Wautoma/Wild Rose securing first place with 53 points, Mauston and Nekoosa would tie for second with 54 points, followed by: Wisconsin Dells, 72; Westfield, 147; and Adams-Friendship, 163.
Sophomore Kordell Woyak led Wautoma/Wild Rose with a 7th place finish with a time of 17:24.99 to earn 1st Team All-Conference honors. Receiving 2nd Team All-Conference for Wautoma/Wild Rose were: Hayden Schwartzman who took 8th place, Caleb Williams, 10th, and Creedon Abraham, 13th.
Rounding out the finishers for Wautoma/Wild Rose were Jordan Reilly, 15th; Ashton Schwartzman, 19th; Lance Erdman, 20th; and Matt Kapral, 21st.
