The Wautoma High School football team defeated the Mauston Golden Eagles 28-22 to win the South Central Conference Championship at home on Oct. 13. The Hornets finished the season undefeated in conference play, and will kick-off the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play-offs this Friday, Oct. 20, at Xavier.

Hornets sting Golden Eagles, 28-22

The Wautoma football team won the South Central Conference Championship finishing off their undefeated conference season with a 28-22 win over the Mauston Golden Eagles at home on Oct. 13.

The first quarter saw neither team able to sustain an offensive drive against the opposing defense; however, starting with the ball in the second quarter, the Hornet offense came to life on a 53-yard pass from Ryan Lois to Spencer Klinger.

Wautoma would score their first touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Lois to Cade Peterson. Lois then ran in the 2-point conversion to take the lead, 8-0.

After an interception by senior Dustin Farrar, the Hornest took over on their own 10-yard line. With 16 seconds left in the half, Lois completed a 90-yard pass to Cade Peterson for another Wautoma touchdown.

In the third quarter, both teams traded touchdowns with Mauston scoring first on a 12-yard pass. On the ensuing kick-off, Max Bennett exploded through a small gap and outran the Mauston kick-off team for a 78-yard touchdown.

Mauston capped their next drive with a 13-yard touchdown run of their own; however, on the Golden Eagles’ next possession, junior Matt Kroll intercepted a pass and ran 60-yards for a touchdown.

Mauston capped their drive as they punched in a 1-yard run as they tried to close the gap as Wautoma led, 28-22. The Hornet defense sealed the South Central Conference Championship when Damean Netzler intercepted the ball with 9 seconds remaining in the game.
