Baumgartner signs National Letter of Intent with Winona State

Having grown up in an athletic family and playing baseball from the time he was able to pick up a wiffle ball, it’s no surprise Almond-Bancroft senior Derek Baumgartner has chosen to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level.

On Nov. 14, Derek Baumgartner officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II baseball at Winona State University in Winona, MN, with plans to major in either business or marketing.

Having had stellar seasons in both football and baseball, Derek Baumgartner admitted he considered playing football at the collegiate level, but ultimately decided against it, stating, “At the end of the day, baseball is my sport.”

Derek Baumgartner made the decision to play for Winona State over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Madison Tech, not only because of the college’s great baseball program, but because he fell in love with the campus and town.

“He took a lot of time making his decision. He looked at both academics and athletics. For that, I am very proud of him,” said Derek’s mother, Marguerite Baumgartner. “He’s a leader, that’s for sure. We are excited for him and his next chapter.”
