ThedaCare Foundation-Berlin meeting needs in Waushara County

ThedaCare Foundation–Berlin recently awarded grant funding to the Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program, which serves economically disadvantaged students in Waushara County.

The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program provides weekend meals for students who attend Waushara County elementary schools reporting high rates of free/reduced lunch program participation. A total of 151 students are participating in the program; a significant increase from the 26 students who participated when the program began in the spring of 2012.

Each week participating students carry program bags home in their backpacks. Each bag carries weekend meals consisting of five to six non-perishable food items and fresh food coupons redeemable for milk, eggs and bread. The program expects to provide more than 34,000 items of food to students during the current school year. Weekend meals are packed for distribution by volunteers at Waushara Industries, Inc. Waushara County’s sheltered workshop.
