LATS work to keep athletes safe at schools

The athletes and students at Wautoma High School are special. When working with them in my role as a Licensed Athletic Trainer, I want to provide them with the best possible care, which is why I was so excited to hear the school received a Safe Sport School Award. The award tells students, parents and community members we are doing everything possible to ensure athletes’ safety.

To earn the award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, I worked closely with Wautoma’s athletic director to fill out the application and make sure we met all of the award’s requirements. Some of those included creating a positive athletic health care administrative system; providing or coordinating pre-physician physical ex-aminations; promoting safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities; developing injury and illness prevention strategies; providing injury intervention; and creating and rehearsing a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan.

As part of the application process, I updated some protocols at the school, made a few changes in the training room, and ensured all coaches and event managers had their required training. It was a lot of work, but the results were worth it.
