Wautoma School Board votes for Spring Break on 2018-19 Calendar

After a discussion about three different proposals for the 2018-2019 School Calendar, the board unanimously approved the calendar including Spring Break March 4-8, 2019 and also including the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 21, 2018.  With the new calendar it was also noted that high school classes will begin at 7:50 a.m. to meet state requirements.  The decision was made at their regular board meeting on March 12 at the Redgranite Elementary School.

The decision on adding Spring Break to the calendar came after a survey was conducted during parent teacher conferences.  The staff voted 60/40 in opposition of Spring Break and the parents voted 65/35 in favor of Spring Break and the board felt it was right to follow the majority voted on by the parents.

Ann Fajfer, Spring Play Director, said that the spring break would effect kids in the play.  The dates and times will have to be considered as Fajfer did not believe any of the students would want to practice during spring break.

Citizens wishing to speak to the board included Gina Piechowski and Sarah Arch. Piechowski addressed the school calendar including conferences, spring breaks, days before Thanksgiving and the day after Easter.  Arch expressed concern over Parent Teacher conferences and why students are punished with an un-excused absence if the parent does not attend conferences. She believes this sends a negative message to the student.
