University of Wisconsin-Extension 4-H Youth Development and Food WIse partnered with the Tri-County School District Summer School Program in July to offer 4-H Food Smart to seven 4-H youth leaders and about 70 summer school students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. UW-Extension staff Zina Soltis, Heidi Hensel-Buntrock and Barb Barker trained 4-H members as teen teachers to educate others about healthy food choices and provide food preparation experiences for the summer school students. Each of the six days the summer school students, with guidance of the teen teachers, prepared a simple snack to reinforce what they learned. Funding was through a grant from United Health Care provided the ingredients, preparation equipment and recognition to the teen teachers.
