Wautoma Kiwanis hear about horology

Subhead

On Oct. 22 the Wautoma Kiwanis Club had its very own member Mike Hoch speak about his hobby called Horology.

Horology is the Study and Measurement of Time and he also fixes clocks, a lost art. Mike started his love of clocks in his late teens when he saw an old clock in the garbage and asked if he could have it. He still has the clock to this day along with a few more he rescued out of the garbage over the years.

Now in his retirement he enjoys fixing clocks for customers who have a family heirloom clock or one they found themselves but the clock just doesn’t work like it should. Mike explained it can take him four to six weeks to complete the repair and ensure it is running correct. The average is about 20 hours of work to take everything apart clean and if needed ordering new parts and reassemble. Then he starts the clock and let it run and with the help of special tools he can determine if and when it is working correct.

Mike had pictures of the many clocks he has fixed over the years from Grandfather to Mantel/Shelf and Wall clocks. Mike is happy to discuss any issues you are having with your clock and if you would be interested in having Mike fix it he can be contacted at 920-765-3049.
