Salt or no salt?

So far we haven’t had really a need for salt on our roads and sidewalks like previous years. Let me give you some information I came across about the use of rock salt, which is sodium chloride, and what happens when used.

When rock salt drains or splashes into the soil or your plants, it can be destructive and deplete the soil of nutrients. If the product is made of potassium chloride, magnesium chloride or calcium chloride, those are slightly less harmful, less caustic and contain nutrients that a plant can use, although not in large quantities.
