US Navy Petty Officer John Mesman awarded Sailor of the Year on USS Ronald Reagan

US Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John Mesman, Wautoma HS Class of 2006, has been awarded the “USS Ronald Reagan Sailor of the Year” award.

PO Mesman has been enlisted in the US Navy since 2014 as a Cryptologic Technical Technician (CTT) assigned to the only forward deployed Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. When deployed with its air wing, a Nimitz class carrier has a crew of almost 6,000.

 

As a CTT Petty Officer, Mesman performs a variety of specialized duties associated with the collection and processing of airborne, shipborne, and land based radar signals. CTTs are the first line of defense against inbound threats and anti-ship missiles while performing in-depth technical analysis of radar signals/systems to produce technical reports and briefs for operational facilities in the United States and worldwide US Allies.

As a Petty Officer Second Class Mesman was the supervisor of 13 sailors in the CTT section on the USS Ronald Reagan. Mesman’s Commanding Officer submitted an extensive nomination for the Sailor of the Year Award. Some excerpts of his nomination were that Mesman was responsible for:

The USS Ronald Reagan’s unprecedented selection for the third consecutive Excellence in Intelligence and Information Warfare Award.

•His extensive technical knowledge and operational aptitude in all aspects of Electronic Information Operations.

•He is known throughout the community as a technical expert of the most advanced Anti-Ship Missile Defense countermeasure systems and suites in the Navy.

•He’s a polished leader who excels in a highly challenging and operationally demanding environment.

•His meticulous attention to detail and impeccable managerial prowess were essential in ensuring USS Ronald Reagan’s material readiness.

•As Assistant Head Coach of the Yokosuka Middle School Dragons track team, he devoted 225 hours to mentor 92 of our Navy-children in the importance of physical fitness, strength and conditioning and teamwork.  His knowledge and expertise led the young all-stars to their first ever Kanto-Regional Conference Championship for Yokosuka Middle School students.

•He has a rare combination of technical expertise, exceptional professionalism, maturity, and poise.

•He’s committed to excellence, he continues to seek and be selected for, positions of leadership, consistently delivering stellar results that surpass all expectations.  Words alone do not satisfactorily describe his impact on the command, the Intelligence Community, and the Navy.

•His character is above reproach and he embodies the Navy’s Core Values in all he does, earning respect from juniors, peers, and seniors alike.

•He is a key contributor to USS Ronald Reagan’s many successes.

•He is the finest Second Class Petty Officer I have encountered onboard Reagan

 

Prior to this award, Mesman has received “Sailor of the Month” as well as “Sailor of the Quarter” awards. Since receiving this award, Mesman was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class and he is planning to make the US Navy his career.
