Blue Ribbon Kid’s Day a Great Day for Area Families
Nearly 1,200 children, parents, and grandparents attended the 27th Annual Blue Ribbon Kid’s Day, held on April 6 at Parkside School in Wautoma.
This family fun and resource fair is coordinated by the Waushara County Department of Human Services Blue Ribbon Kid’s Day Committee. It is held each April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and provides information and activities to inform and strengthen families. The event includes family entertainment, hands on activities, and informational exhibits for parents and children. Jan Novak, Blue Ribbon Kid’s Day Committee Chair is pleased that this event is so well received. “Blue Ribbon Kid’s Day is great for area families. It provides an opportunity for families to learn about area resources and enjoy free family fun, something our local families need. The event’s success and longevity are testaments to incredible community support, program exhibitors and the volunteers who make it happen.”
“Rockin’ with Leonardo” entertained families with original songs that included a message and rock and roll renditions of favorite children’s songs. Children joined Leonardo on stage to sing, dance and play air guitar. Rockin’ with Leonardo was sponsored by the Wautoma and Wild Rose Kiwanis Clubs.
More than fifty exhibitors offered information and interactive hands-on activities for families. Children made wax candles with Wisconsin’s State Honey Queen and Princess, learned about sugar content of everyday drinks with ThedaCare providers, played unique and fun board games designed to build eye/hand coordination and small motor skills, planted seeds with the Master Gardeners, and were encouraged to be active while exploring the Ice Age Trail with hand crafted hiking sticks they decorated at the exhibit. Coloring, crafts, and interactive games engaged children while their parents learned about resources. Other exhibits provide information on fire safety, child care, Head Start, parenting, nutrition, 4H and other youth organizations, breastfeeding, support groups, after school programs, WIC and services provided by the Waushara County Department of Human Services.
