Miguel Duran

Area youth wrestler in fight of his life

Miguel Duran, 9, is a 3rd grade student currently attending Clay Lamberton Elementary school in Berlin. He was a student of Riverview Elementary, Wautoma, until last year. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyoscarcoma on Sept. 15, 2018, just 2 days after his 8th birthday. He started receiving weekly treatments in Milwaukee at the Children’s Hospital MACC Fund Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Miguel had to stay home from school due to his weakened immune system. He had a port placed, and due to risk of injury, he had to skip out on his favorite sport of wrestling, but he was allowed to coach his teammates that year for the Wautoma Super Stingers. He did get to play baseball during the spring/summer.

In September 2019, he was placed on remission and scheduled to go back in 3 months to have scans done. On December 11th, the family found out that Miguel’s cancer had returned. During the family appointment, they were told that because the cancer has grown back and the cancer cells have the PAX/FOX gene, and it is very aggressive. They are guesstimating 2-3 months before cancer takes its toll on Miguel’s life.

He is currently taking Panzopanib a pill form of chemo. The hope is that it will slow the progress of his cancer and allow the family more time with him. The fact that it is a pill allows him to stay in school and he does not have to be in the hospital weekly. He is able to continue doing the things he loves, like wrestle, while he still has some strength. The family has noticed a decline in strength in energy, but not sure it is due to chemo or cancer.

His family includes his mom, Arlene Bialk, a brother, 6, Marcus Duran and two sisters Mia Medrano, 3, and Lyla Medrano, 1 from his mother’s side. He also has 2 sisters in Mexico, Mirely Duran, 3, and a newborn yet to be named.

This is tearing up the family entirely. With all his appointments there is missed work, the cost is high but thinking of losing him is the worst.

There is also a go Fund Me Page set up to help with giving Miguel some memorable moments for his last few months and to help fund his end of life expenses/funeral costs.

The family has an account set up at Associated Bank at P.O. Box 750, Wautoma, WI 54982. Please make checks payable to Iris Duran, (Miguel’s Aunt).

Together we can make a difference...

If every household in  Waushara County could donate one dollar we could raise over $10,000 for this family. Donations can be dropped off at Associated Bank or the Waushara Argus.

Publisher’s Note: Miguel and his family need your prayers and monetary support during this most difficult time. Miguel is a fighter and continues to wrestle even though his strength is diminishing.
